Synopsis:
When high school student Tohru Honda's mother dies in a car crash, Tohru decides to live with her grandfather. Renovations on the house and unsupportive and unkind family members cause her to move out of her grandfather's house temporarily and, since she has nowhere else to go, Tohru begins living in a tent and supporting herself. That is, until she finds a home in the least likely of places, inhabited by her popular classmate Yuki Sohma and his cousin Shigure. The first day Tohru moves into the Sohma house, an orange haired teenager crashes through the roof of her new bedroom and starts attacking Yuki. This newcomer is Kyo, Yuki and Shigure's aggressively angry cousin. Tohru tries to stop the fight by holding him, causing him to transform into an orange cat in front of her. Thoughts:
There were two things that made me watch the 2019 version of Fruits Basket. First is, Yuma Uchida is the seiyuu of Soma Kyo. Yuma Uchida is one of my favourite seiyuu and voiced Ash in my all-time favourite anime, Banana Fish. Second is, I actually forgot the plot of the story. Well, I knew that it is about the zodiac spirits cursing the Soma family but that is all. Plus the fact the last time I watched the series was around 13 years ago.
The first thing that I noticed in this anime is the art. The previous version that I watched was pretty dull. What I meant was, the characters are lacking energy if we are basing it through the art. Even though Tohru is an energetic type of character, you can’t even feel it. There is also a possibility that because I watched the previous version when I was still a kid, my ideals and interpretations were different unlike today. To be honest, I realized that before, I was looking differently with the story. Believe me or not, I looked at Kyo as an enemy lolol and hated Tohru’s kindness towards him. This is why it is important to re-watch the old animes that we watched before especially when we are still brats.
I am not really sure because my memories a little bit hazy now but I actually noticed how the anime gave enough screen time to the other zodiacs. They were given enough attention this time. Throughout the anime as I watch it more, little by little I am getting annoyed with Tohru. Yes, I know she is a pure and delicate with kindness but that was the thing that actually annoyed me. Is there something that might give the viewers a twist in her character? The story goes on but the sequence is actually repeating. The zodiac has a bad past and this protagonist girl is healing them... And then what? It is actually repeating it all over again. Maybe that’s the thing with shoujo. Oh, not maybe, it is always like this in the shoujo world. No hate by the way. I used to love shoujo mangas before turning myself as a fujoshi trash.
But one good thing actually with this version of Fruits Basket, finally they were able to do a second season! Yay!!! I am looking forward to it ~ How I wish Ouran High School Host Club will have it's own S2.
Animation: 10/10
The art is incredibly good. Gave enough effort to execute the funny scenes and “some” fight scenes. Ofc it is better than the previous one. It should be afterall, Japanese animation is getting better.
Soundtrack: 8/10
I am not sure to think more about this. I don’t actually have the habit of skipping opening and ending songs but I actually did it in this anime. Reason? Hmmmm I don’t like to mention any reason HAHA.
Overall: 9/10
Still recommended especially with girls and shoujo fans. Well even though I don’t recommend this the shoujo fans out there, I’m sure that they know this anime.
