Dororo (2019) Anime Review

Title: Dororo
Genre: Dark Fantasy, Supernatural, Historical
Written By: Osamu Tezuka
Studio: MAPPA, Tezuka Productions
Synopsis: The greedy samurai lord Daigo Kagemitsu’s land is dying, and he would do anything for power, even renounce Buddha and make a pact with demons. His prayers are answered by 12 demons who grant him the power he desires by aiding his prefecture's growth, but at a price. When Kagemitsu's first son is born, the boy has no limbs, no nose, no eyes, no ears, nor even skin—yet still, he lives. This child is disposed of in a river and forgotten. But as luck would have it, he is saved by a medicine man who provides him with prosthetics and weapons, allowing for him to survive and fend for himself. The boy lives and grows, and although he cannot see, hear, or feel anything, he must defeat the demons that took him as sacrifice. With the death of each one, he regains a part of himself that is rightfully his. For many years he wanders alone, until one day an orphan boy, Dororo, befriends him. The unlikely pair of castaways now fight for their survival and humanity in an unforgiving, demon-infested world. (https://myanimelist.net/anime/37520/Dororo)

Thoughts:

Been wanting to watch this anime because good ratings and feedbacks from the viewers. Plus it is a type anime that I am into recently. I am a fan of Sengoku era timelines in anime or in games. I love samurai stories with demons and youkais and I've been reading historical stories about it. So Dororo is really fir into my taste right now.

While I am searching for the anime poster for this blog, I read that this story was actually a manga from 1960s. This is a gold! For real. Does MAPPA loves making anime adaptations from mangas in early times? One of the example is Banana Fish. Banana Fish is an old manga as well that animated by MAPPA. With this, I love you now Studio MAPPA. This anime has a live adaptation as well. might see it soon.

Anyways, if we will talk about the plot, this plot might be a unique one. Yes, in samurai era type of stories with demons and ghouls, usually there are curses however this type of curse isn't that unique one however it is something interestiing. A child actually survived living?! This type of plot would make you want to look after the protagonist how will he finish everyting that we needs to do.

The ending is somewhat isn't a good one. I am not saying it is not a good ending plot wise but it was an immoral ending. Why does someone have to dieeee?? But thinking about it more deeply, this is how they actually lived in the early era (If I will be basing from all the animes, mangas and games that I read before). Lives are such a cheap thing before. Samurai way of life maybe? (Naruto Reference sorry) Anyway, still I think that it is actually the most appropriate ending for Dororo. A good ending for our protagonists Dororo and Hyakkimaru.

Animation: 10/10

As expected from MAPPA. Aside from Studio Peirrot, I love MAPPA's animations especially in the fight scenes (I'm talking about their most recent animes, not sure with their old animes) This is a good watch if you are looking for a good Samurai anime.

Soundtrack: 10/10

YES YES YES! AN EARLY ERA MUSIC USING THEIR EARLY TYPE OF INSTRUMENTS (sorry I don't know what to call those instruments LOL). With this, you can actually have the feels of living in the Sengoku period. Aside from the good OST, it has also a good openings and endings. To be honest, I am into it's first opening entitled "Kaen" by Ziyoou-vachi. It has a good vibe but still the old Japanese era was heard in the song.

Overall: 10/10

Totally a good thing to watch! Luckily, I decided to watch it ~
